So I just did a project for my Public Relations class in which I logged for 48 hours my uses via media and social media and then for 24 hours refrained from using any form of media and kept a journal. WOW is all I have to say. Not having a cell phone or a computer for a day...FREEDOM.
At first I wasn't quite sure how the day of refraining from all media would go. How would I contact a professor if I had a question, how would I call my mom to just say hi, contact my friends to see what time we were getting lunch. An array of different questions flew through my mind that all resulted in the same answer of: I needed a form of media to accomplish any.
However, instead of worrying about any of those things I just went with the flow and shut down all my uses of media for a period of 24 hours. At first it was eh. I really didn't know how to contact anyone to see where they were. Things came up throughout the day that I wanted to call my mom and tell her about but I couldn't. There were periods of time I was so bored and just wanted to go on the computer and waste time. Things that could be done within a minute by having the ability to have these forms of media felt undoable when not having the ability to use them.
To my surprise though not having the ability to use any form of media was awesome. It felt like a weight had been lifted. I didn't have to worry about anything!! It felt good to be free for a day. Not feeling pressured or worrying about what needed to be done next. I felt alone and felt that I could do whatever I wanted without talking to anyone and having to worry about what they had to say about it. That is exactly what Powers explain in his book. After dropping his cell phone into the water while being on the boat made me feel free! Not having my cell phone for a day made me feel the same way. I was able to connect to different things and think about things more real then if I was able to just sit in my bed and aimlessly browse the web.
The finest clothing made is a person's skin, but, of course, society demands something more than this. ~Mark Twain

After the first couple weeks enrolled in this class I knew my perspective about a lot of things would drastically alter after listening to discussions presented by both my classmates and professor each class
I knew my outlook on the Internet, the television and really any other media-orientated technology would dramatically change from what it was
I LOVE television. I LOVE going on the computer. I LOVE using my phone. THIS CLASS HAS TOTALLY ALTERED MY LOVE FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE THINGS!
After reading Postman's book I completely changed my outlook on television. Every time I would go to my friends house I would tell them to turn the t.v. off (weird?) They would look at me and ask "what has gotten into you!" It was a whole new me and I kinda like it!
The ability for people to have conversations and to pay attention to one another without get bored in 5 seconds has deteriorated. I don't want to be put into that category! I want to be able to have conversations, hang out without any distractions in the background and just talk. Society today needs to re-check themselves and realize that life is to short to be distracted all the time. Live in the moment, don't let the television live for you!

who ever said wearing white after labor day was such a crime? I for sure do not think so.
have you ever wondered why there are so many rules, even when it comes down to fashion!! I get rules in math or when opening up your own business, but common, rules for dressing? i say fuck those rules, wear what you want!
in my first post when I discussed how media dictates what is socially acceptable to wear and what is not, I did mean that. I definitely believe that media presents the public with certain ideas of what is right and what is wrong. The web, television, magazines are all different forms of technology dictating to people what they should wear. Wearing white after labor day is socially unacceptable! I say psh, who cares! WEAR WHAT YOU WANT!
Because people are so dependent on others for ideas I guess rules are needed most of the time? people can not make up their own mind and need to turn to someone or something.

So I am currently working at the library sitting behind the front desk twirling my hair, tapping my pen, doing ANYTHING to occupy the time! I brought a book with me... attempted to read it, read 1 chapter of 15 pages and put it down. What has this world come to! It scares me how hard it is to concentrate and get through a simple, enjoyable, light book!
What I do wish is to be scooping facebook, duh. Checking out the pictures from Halloween, going through peoples pages that I have no idea who they are, what else! Seems pretty normal to me?

Boredom: the state of being bored
Ways to resolve being bored: go on the computer, text your friends, watch television, listen to music, read a book (ha, probably not)
It's scary to think that in today's society when someone is bored the way in which it is resolved is usually through some sort of media orientated way. Whether you go on your computer and wander through facebook for hours (which is usually what people do), text your friends about nonsense that doesn't even have a point, or just put on a television show because your just to damn lazy to do anything else, the idea of the media is all around it. It is stalking our lives! Why not just pick up a book and read for a while? It's what my mom does, why can't I! Oh yeah, because I probably do not have the attention span to sit and read a book, but I sure am able to hoop on the computer and do the most unimportant things EVERRRR.
I think after posting this I may read a book? That could be cool; maybe learn some new vocabulary and just chill. Ill let you know how that goes (if it even does)

Who are we all kidding? In todays day and age everyone is OBSESSED with the internet! There's no escaping it. People use it when their bored, when they are entertained just can't concentrate (ADD much?), when they need to find an outfit to wear last minute, to find out the latest gossip, to stalk friends on facebook and all other uncountable things! Even though I agree with some of what Klosterman expressed, I know that in reality nothing will ever change. If anything things will get worse in the future!
Even though it would be a cool idea to just pick up and forget about the internet or television thats just not real life.
WE ARE COMMENTING OUR IDEAS ABOUT THIS ON THE INTERNET! That pretty much is the best example there is!!!!!
In the writing Klosterman states "the Unabomber believes modern people have no idea how they're supposed to think or feel, so they convince themselves to care about whatever rules the rest of society seems to require." That pretty much illustrates all the keys ideas he is trying to express:
1. people can not think for themselves, they need decisions to be made by society (but don't really know it)
2. the internet, television, the radio, etc. is just an escape for them to hide and believe that whatever they are doing is the right thing because it is socially excepted
3. people conform to the status quo as choose by society without consciously knowing
For many, the internet gives people their life meaning... Pretty sad, but true.

sitting in the library for hours on end can be to most, considered a drag. i find it kind of fun though.
looking at what people wear and how they dress is one of my favorite things to do. i wonder to myself if they have ever watched television or have ever flipped through any type of magazine? it baffles my mind at some of the clothing and shoes people wear. not sure if they are trying to start a new fashion trend, walk down the runway at a major fashion event or make a statement to the world, but common, don't you look in the mirror before you go out?
in todays society what to wear and how to be is all dictated through the media. there are those who do decide for themselves, but for the rest decision making isn't there most favorite thing to do. the media expresses ideas that are for the most part in favor of the public and result in people listening to those specific ideas. even though they are not true all the time its the easiest way for people to live, unopinionated zombies much?
